Where precision is created: CNC24 and the art of turned part production

Basics

What is CNC machining?

CNC machining (Computerized Numerical Control) includes computer-controlled manufacturing processes such as CNC turning and CNC milling. This involves high-precision machining of metal and plastic blanks – ideal for functional, precisely fitting and reproducible components.

The process can be used on a wide range of complex machines: From grinding machines to lathes and milling machines.

Typical processes:

  • CNC milling: 3-, 4- and 5-axis machining for complex contours
  • CNC turning: efficient production of rotationally symmetrical parts
  • Multi-sided machining, drilling, reaming, thread cutting

Material selection

Which materials are suitable for CNC machining?

In addition to the “classic” machining materials such as steel, stainless steel, free-cutting steel or aluminum, our range of services naturally also includes the machining of materials such as copper, brass or plastics.

Of course, we can also process special materials, such as high-alloy steels, on request.

Of course, our expertise does not end with the turning of workpieces: We are happy to take on further assembly services or the coating of finished assemblies for you.

Optimize design manufacturing

CNC programming languages and software

  1. Design of the CAD model
It all starts with a precise 3D CAD model that defines all the geometric and technical requirements of the component. This model forms the basis for the entire production process.
  2. Translation into machine-readable code (CAM)
CAM software is used to translate the CAD model into G-code, the language that CNC machines understand.
  3. Preparing the CNC machine
The selection of suitable tools, clamping devices and the definition of optimum cutting parameters (speed, feed, infeed) is crucial for accuracy, tool life and surface quality.
  4. Automated machining
The actual machining process begins with the loaded G-code. The workpiece is manufactured layer by layer, contour by contour, precisely according to specifications – highly reproducible and efficient.
  5. Post-processing & finish
Depending on the application, deburring, grinding, surface treatment or fitting may follow. CNC24 coordinates these steps via certified partners and ensures functional and visual perfection.
  6. Quality control & test report
Each component is checked for dimensional accuracy, surface quality and function – documented with a measurement report or EMPB in accordance with ISO 9001 if required.

If these work steps are followed carefully, as is the case at CNC24, CNC manufacturing can produce components with the highest degree of precision and outstanding quality.

Material selection

What is meant by machinability?

Machinability is the ability of a material to be shaped by mechanical processes such as turning, milling, drilling or grinding with chip removal. This property describes how easily or difficultly a material can be machined using these processes.

Machinability is an important factor when selecting materials, as it has a direct influence on production costs, efficiency and the quality of the end product.

What we produce

Sample components

How to reduce costs in CNC machining

Thanks to state-of-the-art CNC technology and qualified manufacturing partners, CNC24 realizes tight tolerances reliably and economically – typically in the range of ±0.005 mm for standard components and up to ±0.001 mm for high-precision components. Each tolerance is individually tailored to the requirements of your component to ensure optimum dimensional accuracy, function and quality.

Reduce complexity

Simplify geometry

Avoid unnecessarily complex contours, difficult-to-access machining points or extremely fine internal radii. A simplified geometry improves machinability, shortens production time and reduces material and tool wear – which has a direct positive effect on costs, throughput time and repeat accuracy.

Designing accessibility

Consider tool accessibility

As early as the design stage, ensure that all relevant areas of the component are easily accessible for tools. Inaccessible zones lead to costly additional clamping, special tools or even manual reworking – all factors that unnecessarily increase costs and throughput times. Good accessibility ensures efficiency and process stability in machining.

Prevent deformation

Avoid thin walls

Avoid wall thicknesses that are too thin, as these can lead to vibrations, stresses and deformations during CNC machining. A minimum wall thickness of 0.5 mm for metals and 1.5 mm for plastics is recommended to ensure dimensional accuracy and surface quality. Stable walls contribute to structural integrity and better machinability.

As narrow as necessary

Define tolerances economically

Tight tolerances cause more effort, longer machine running times and rising production costs. Define critical dimensional tolerances only where they are functionally necessary – e.g. for fit seats, bearing bores or sealing surfaces. For non-critical areas, we recommend coarser tolerances in order to make efficient use of time, resources and budget.

„Strong expertise for our fire-fighting drone”

Throughout our collaboration we have been impressed by CNC24’s manufacturing expertise.
With CNC24’s feedback we were able to optimise the components and make significant cost savings. As a start-up, we don’t have our own measuring centre, so the additional quality assurance provided by CNC24 was very important to us.
