CNC24 survey: Potential of digital component procurement not yet exhausted
Smart manufacturer CNC24 presents the results of its latest online survey on the state of the paver market. 241 participants from German SMEs were surveyed. While regionality and quality are the most important factors when purchasing components, sourcing via digital marketplaces still plays a subordinate role.
Berlin, December 6, 2022 – Industry and business are currently struggling with many challenges and global crises. It is therefore not surprising that local supply chains are playing an increasingly important role in component procurement. At 98.8%, the majority of the companies surveyed source their components from Europe, followed by China with 30.7% and North America with 7.9%. According to the survey, the trend towards decoupling and nearshoring will continue, as 81.3% of participants expect production to increasingly return to Europe. When choosing a component manufacturer, quality is also by far the most important decision factor at 61.8%, while the issue of sustainability is of little concern to the industry at 2.9%.
Lots of potential for digitization in medium-sized companies
There is great potential in bundled component procurement: So far, only 38.2% of respondents source their components from a digital marketplace. The reasons for procuring components via a marketplace are time savings (71.8%), lower prices (66.4%) and access to a global supplier network (46.9%). The results on the status of digitalization show that there is still a lot of potential for development in this area: only 66.4% of the companies surveyed manage supplier data digitally, 47.3% use digital order processes, 22.8% use a contract management system and 19.9% of supplier searches are digitalized. Around a quarter of respondents (25.7%) have not yet digitized any of these processes. The respondents see the high costs and time required for the changeover (50.2%), followed by factors such as insufficiently trained personnel (44%) and a shortage of skilled workers (39.4%), as a particular challenge in the digitalization of component procurement.
“SMEs lack the capacity and know-how for a consistent digital strategy – as an online marketplace, we can be an important partner here and enable companies to focus on their core competencies. The survey has confirmed that this potential is increasingly being recognized: In the future, we will take over the complete supply chain management for production parts for even more companies,” is how Willi Ruopp, CEO and co-founder, classifies the result.
