Sheet metal types and their composition
What actually is sheet metal?
The term sheet metal describes rolled, thin metal for further processing. There is an almost infinite number of different types of sheet metal, as a wide variety of metal compositions can be processed into sheet metal. These include aluminum, non-ferrous metal and various types of steel.
Sheet metal is usually available in sheet form and has different properties, which are created by its cold or hot rolling in the preparation process, among other things. When we talk about sheet metal processing, we are basically referring to all non-machining sheet metal processing methods.

Sheet metal in the industry
Sheet metal applications
When we talk about the use of sheet metal, the areas of application are almost endless. Industries that do not require sheet metal can be counted on one hand these days.
For example, sheet metal joints are used in the automotive industry, in the manufacture of new cars and in the refurbishment of classic cars. Perforated sheets are in demand for the manufacture of housings and equipment cabinets, but are also popular with designers for the production of art objects due to their versatility. There are also special apparatus engineering and plant construction sheets for production. Furthermore, the entire electrical engineering sector benefits from sheet metal applications and the food industry also uses sheet metal in a wide range of processing applications.
At CNC24, we can procure checker plate, perforated plate and many other types of sheet metal quickly and easily – thanks to our strong network of over 500 selected producers.

Popular sheet metal types and their properties
Sheet metal types and areas of application of the materials
Aluminum
Aluminum is around a third lighter than steel. Nevertheless, depending on the alloy, aluminum is very robust and is no less resistant to weathering. The material is often used in lightweight construction, particularly in the automotive and aircraft industries. Aluminum is also one of the number one materials used for engine and gearbox housings. Aluminum sheets are available in various thicknesses.
Steel
Sheet steel is versatile and is used to form many different components. Steel is one of the most important materials in the manufacturing industry. It is often used in transportation or mechanical engineering. Stainless steel sheet also plays a particularly important role as a base material in the catering and medical sectors, as stainless steel is both very robust and has a sterile surface.
In the home, especially in the kitchen, stainless steel shines with its robustness and durability. Alloys with chromium and nickel make stainless steel resistant to corrosion and weathering. This also makes sheet steel interesting for outdoor use. Stainless steel sheets are available either untreated, in a polished version with different grain sizes or as a polished 3D mirror sheet.
There are also Corten steel sheets. Copper, chrome and nickel are added to Corten steel to achieve intensive weather resistance. Corten steel is often used in gardens due to its weather resistance. The material stands out due to its typical rust-red color of the applied stainless steel. COR-TEN is sometimes also written in this form with a hyphen; the term describes the properties “corrosion resistant” and “tensile strength”.
Copper
Copper is soft and has excellent thermal and conductivity properties. It is also characterized by its ductility and durability. Copper is an excellent choice for further processing within the electrical industry, for example for electrical conductors or circuit boards in computers and machines. It is also frequently used for sealing and in the construction sector for roofing work. Craftsmen and jewelry makers are also fascinated by the decorative color of sheet metal.
Brass
Brass is also used in a wide variety of industries. Its stability and corrosion resistance make it perfect for the production of pipes, valves and fittings in the sanitary sector. Ship propellers are also made from brass. Brass is also used in control, measurement and regulation technology as well as in mechanical engineering and power plant construction. Precision mechanics and electrical engineers also often opt for brass as a material.
Brass can have different shades of color depending on the alloy, with the zinc content playing the biggest role. The color is often very similar to gold, which has made brass ideal for the production of jewelry, cult objects and works of art since ancient times.

What does sheet metal lasering mean?
Laser cutting is one of the thermal cutting processes. This computer-aided and non-contact processing technology is an excellent way of cutting three-dimensional products, such as profiles, from flat-rolled sheets of various materials such as steel, stainless steel or aluminum at top speed and with millimetre precision. Laser cutting is officially one of the most economical cutting processes in sheet metal processing. The reason for this is that, in most cases, no post-processing is required after the finished cut.

How does lasering sheet metal work?
Sheet metal lasering is the intentional cutting through or removal of parts of the workpiece using a continuous or pulsed laser beam. This is known as material ablation. The cutting speed of a CNC laser cutter is around 140 m/min.
But what exactly is a laser beam and how is it created? The laser beam is created from electromagnetic radiation sources. The light from the radiation source is emitted with high intensity. At the same time, the cutting nozzle, which is concentric to the laser, takes on the task of removing the ablated material from the joints. Both processes take place simultaneously. In CNC laser cutting, the aggregate state of the joint material depends on how the gas is supplied and the temperature of the gas itself and the effective area.

Differentiation between the various types of laser production
What types of laser cutting are there?
Laser fusion cutting/
Laser fusion cutting
In laser fusion cutting, the parts of the material to be removed are slowly and continuously melted along the contour to be cut. The molten material, the so-called alation material, is then finally blown out with a gas jet under high pressure. To avoid possible oxidation, the laser beam energy must be set very precisely.
Laser flame cutter/
Laser torch cutter
Laser flame cutters burn the material to be removed directly at the cutting edges. Laser steel flame cutters are often used for thick materials. In this case, the precise cut that is possible is achieved using pure oxygen, which is blown onto the cutting point. Together with the material, it generates a high level of heat.
Laser sublimation cutting
In laser sublimation cutting, the material to be removed is vaporized at the cutting edges instead of being melted. The process is called sublimation. Gas is also used in this method. However, the gas does not blow out the joint in this method, but is used to protect the mirrors and lenses in this case. Laser sublimation cutting is a good choice for plastic, among other things, as it produces clear cut edges.
Tube laser cutting
The most modern form of processing pipes and profiles allows several conventional processes to be processed in just one step. In addition to round shapes, rectangular, square or oval cross-sections are also no problem. On request, contours can also be produced perfectly.
2D laser cutting
The 2D laser cutting method is often a good and cost-effective alternative to the conventional punching process. It can be a good solution for various material groups and especially for the production of small quantities.
In two-dimensional laser cutting, the laser beam hits the material, causing it to melt or burn. If very thin material such as leather or paper is processed, it can also be processed immediately under certain circumstances.
3D laser cutting
3D laser technology is the crème de la crème of non-machining process technologies. It can be used to produce even the most complex geometric workpieces to a very high quality in the shortest possible time. Modern laser cutting systems can also be used in combination, for example for laser punching work.
Points to note when lasering sheet metal
Which method is the best?
Which method of sheet metal laser cutting is suitable for your particular project depends in particular on the thickness of the sheet metal you have, its processing method and, of course, the desired end product. The quality of the cut surfaces depends largely on the chemical composition of the material and the homogeneity of the sheet metal.
We at CNC24 will be happy to advise you in more detail on the individual techniques you are particularly interested in and find the most suitable technique for your purposes.

Good to know
The advantages of laser cutting
It is not without reason that laser technology is one of the most popular separation processes. Here are three of the main advantages:
Quality and precision
The decisive advantages of laser cutting are the quality, precision and accuracy of the technological cutting process. To name just a few figures that are possible when laser cutting sheet metal, among other things:
- Contour accuracies of ± 0.01 mm
- Cut joints/cutting gaps of approx. 0.03 mm
- Tolerances of ± 0.1 mm
The laser cutter also makes it possible to cut edges at an exact right angle. The use of gases means that hardly any post-processing is required. Laser cutting is therefore one of the most economical processes available on the market.
Flexible use
There is no other cutting process on the market that offers such a wide range of materials. The laser can be used to precisely cut through and process almost anything, from steel and ceramics to plastics and fiber composites. It can also be used to incorporate fine geometries or engravings within combined processes. Sheet metal is given the finest cutting lines of the highest quality.
Economic efficiency
Lasers have a very high cutting speed with consistent quality, post-processing is almost never necessary. No other cutting process comes close to this combination of laser cutting of sheet metal and other materials. The material utilization is 1A. Another aspect of cost-effectiveness is that the computer-aided CNC laser process does not incur any set-up and wear costs for other tools. In addition, geometries can even be changed if necessary.
